The Introduction of Storage Solutions in Our Lives Adds Strength to Green Energy

07 Dec 2024

Eksim Energy CEO Arkın Akbay made statements highlighting the critical role played by energy storage and battery technologies in the development of renewable energy. Akbay emphasized that storage is very important for renewable energy sources such as sun and wind to be more included in our electricity generation portfolio and said, “Simultaneously with the increase in the amount of electricity produced from renewable energy sources, the need for storage systems increases. The size and pace of realization of this need will be determined by the transition to electrification in heating, transportation, data centers and industrial production, and the increase in consumption. "In addition, the share of renewable resources in total production that will respond to this increase, the demand for flexibility in our transmission and distribution network, and our consumers who demand protection from instantaneous imbalances between production and consumption, both financially and in terms of energy quality, will also affect this process."

Eksim Energy, a subsidiary of Eksim Holding, known for its successful activities in the field of renewable energy, attaches importance to improving the efficiency of storage solutions in order to strengthen the integration of energy resources. The combination of natural resources that produce intermittent electricity, such as wind and solar, and storage technologies ensures economical, high-quality and continuous access to electrical energy. Storage solutions that ensure the security of the transmission and distribution network by balancing the difference between the times of energy production and consumption reduce carbon emissions by reducing the use of fossil fuels.

Storage solutions are being developed for uninterrupted energy

Stating that the intermittent production nature of renewable energy resources increases the importance of electricity storage, Eksim Energy CEO Arkın Akbay emphasized that renewable energy transformation is also a fundamental building block for prosperity and development. Stating that this transformation has accelerated with the implementation of the carbon tax regime and environmental sustainability principles applied in developed markets, Akbay said, “Due to the production regime of renewable energy resources, we need storage solutions to ensure supply security and deliver quality energy to our consumers. Electrochemical batteries, which we know as batteries today, stand out for storing electrical energy. In addition, pumped storage hydroelectric power plants, mechanical impellers that store kinetic energy, and mechanical energy storage mechanisms working with hydraulic principles are also used. In this way, we can store the clean energy we produce with the power we get from nature for a long time, fill in the missing energy when needed, or provide continuous and economical energy supply to consumers by storing energy if instant consumption is lower than production, and store our wind, sun and water as electricity without wasting it.” He made a statement.

As renewable energy increases, the need for storage will increase

Underlining the need for storage systems to provide uninterrupted response to energy demand and to ensure the quality of this response, Akbay said, “The size of the storage service depends on the transition to electrification in heating, transportation, data centers and industrial production, and the consumer's energy demand and demand for flexibility in the usage time of electricity. Quality management of the transmission and distribution system depends on the instantaneous consumption of electrical energy and its storage if there is excess production. Cutting down production always results in a loss of capacity and efficiency. In order to prevent storage systems from remaining idle, it is essential to include instant and medium-term storage in a balanced manner. In this context, a storage system will be activated gradually to meet the needs of the transmission and distribution network. "The increase in the amount of electricity produced from renewable energy sources today will accelerate the increase in electrical energy storage systems." he said.

Storage minimizes energy outages

The negative effects of fossil energy sources on climate change and health, agriculture and water availability continue at an increasing rate, and this requires acceleration of measures. Considering the negative effects of carbon emissions on the ecosystem resulting from the burning of carbon-based primary energy sources such as coal, oil and natural gas, it becomes clear that electricity production based on renewable energy sources must be put into use in a planned and accelerated manner.

Noting that the development and dissemination of energy storage systems plays a critical role in responding to energy demand in a quality and timely manner, Akbay continued his statement; “Resources such as coal, oil and natural gas, which increase the current account deficit by importing, should now only come into play to meet the energy needs when the grid cannot provide sufficient supply from renewable sources, they should keep hot or cold capacity as backup in the form of rainy day support, and they should support the quality of energy when necessary. We must increase electricity production from renewable energy sources so much that we eliminate carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels. "Storage facilities that will be integrated into renewable energy production will increase energy security by making a significant contribution to delivering quality and cost-effective energy to the consumer." he said.
